By John Mitchell, IPC president and CEO

Spring brings with it change and renewal, and we certainly welcome that in a time that has been so uncertain. Like all other industries, we’ve adjusted our work during the pandemic, as we develop new ways of providing our members with what they need to be successful.

For the first time in 20 years, IPC APEX EXPO was held virtually, leaving us without the opportunity to physically gather as an industry at IPC’s flagship event. However, with the electronics industry being as innovative and resilient as ever, the event was a success in this different modality, and attendees, speakers, exhibitors, and staff responded well to the change. And why wouldn’t they? The electronics industry is defined by change!  An important feature of the virtual event was the opportunity for us to provide recordings on demand. Until June 13, you can take advantage of all the technical education and professional development sessions, visit exhibitors, and watch keynote presentations.

Two new IPC initiatives were launched at IPC APEX EXPO 2021, addressing current issues within our industry. ESG for Electronics was created to develop guidance for electronics manufacturers on an industry-specific approach to ESG (environmental, social and governance) practices and reporting and to develop aspirational goals that the industry is working together to achieve. Further details on ESG for Electronics can be found here.

IPC also launched the Thought Leaders Program (TLP), a select group of experts who will generate ideas and IPC also insights in five areas: education and workforce; technology and innovation; the economy; key markets; and environment, health, and safety. The Thought Leaders’ responsibilities will include providing publishable material in their subject areas; flagging opportunities for IPC engagement; and participating in quarterly roundtable discussions. Each expert is expected to fulfill at least one 12-month term, during which quarterly contributions will be expected. I look forward to their upcoming report on the U.S. Defense Department’s Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification, expected later this year.

In addition to ESG for Electronics and the TLP, we are closely following the worldwide news on the recovery from the pandemic. Specifically, we requested a study of how the electronics industry has withstood the negative effects of the pandemic, particularly in Europe. That study, Digital Directions, Greener Connections, highlights the importance of electronics systems as a main driver of global GDP growth. You can find information on the study here.

Our continued focus on workforce development to address the skills gap has resulted in several new training programs. David Hernandez, vice president, education, provides an update on how IPC can help your employees obtain the training they need for a successful career in electronics.

As always, please reach out to me with any questions or concerns about the activities underway at IPC. I welcome your comments.
