Please pay attention to your reporting obligations to the new SCIP Database
IPC members may have obligations to report information on electronics components and end products containing REACH Candidate List substances to the Substances of Concern in Products (SCIP) database. Companies supplying products containing substances of very high concern (SVHCs) in a concentration above 0.1% weight by weight (w/w) on the EU market must have submitted information to the SCIP database as of January 2021.
Here’s more information from IPC about the SCIP database.
And, here’s more information from the European Chemicals Agency about the SCIP database, reporting requirements, and helpful guides.
We’re tracking a variety of activities on the EU RoHS Directive
General Review: The European Commission is conducting a review of its directive on the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) in electrical and electronic equipment, to consider its effectiveness, efficacy, and coherence. This review is taking place concurrently with the launch of several new strategies and action plans in support of the “European Green Deal,” including those for a circular economy and the upcoming Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability.
In April 2021, a consultant’s report on the RoHS General Review was released here. The study found that RoHS is effective in preventing the release of certain restricted hazardous substances during use and waste treatment of electrical and electronic equipment.
Exemptions: IPC participates in the RoHS Industry Umbrella Project, a group of partnering industry associations. We work with the Umbrella Project as members of the Strategic Management Team. Member companies can and do participate in relevant Working Groups. In late 2019 and early 2020, IPC reviewed and supported renewal applications for approximately 20 exemptions.
As of May 2021, the consultants to the Commission are accepting public stakeholder comments on the exemption applications. Learn more here and here.
