Frequently Asked Questions: Free Member Documents

What is the most current policy for free member documents?
As of September 2018, the distribution of free member documents for IPC members will be switched from I.H.S to IPC.  Rather than requesting documents through the IPC website, a designated Free Member Document Recepient at all member sites will receive an email from IPC directing them to a web page where they can immediately download the latest free member documents. Instructions on how to download the document(s) are provided in the email.

As with all new IPC releases, these documents will have single-device digital rights management (DRM) protection. This means the document(s) can be opened on only one device (computer, tablet, etc.). The files are DRM protected to ensure copyright protection, integrity of the document and maintaining the value of the standards. DRM will protect the IP you and others have created for the electronics industry.  DRM documents do not allow printing or screen shots.  For FAQ on Digital Rights Management document (DRM) please see DRM Frequently Asked Questions.

If the primary contact is not the actual user of the document IPC is allowing the end-user to become the primary contact. To request a change please send an email to Contact.us@ipc.org.

Replacing free member documents
IPC will work with member companies on replacement of lost or previously used free member documents as long as the original documents are within last five years or two revisions back and proof of sale/request and/or library records screenshot from the customer is provided.

When did the new policy take effect?
IPC is now managing the free member docs process. IPC is providing the member site the same benefit of a free member doc for each new revision or new standard when it is published. There has been no change in policy.

Why is DRM being Used?
DRM was put in place to maintain the integrity of IPC and industry intellectual property (IP). IPC is concerned with the integrity of industry documents and wants to maintain credibility and consistency of standards for our members success. Because a print from a digital file may not be revision controlled in an ISO compliant manufacturing system, IPC has introduced DRM protection which does not allow a print feature.

Should we lose our digital copies of free member documents due to hardware failure, will IPC provide replacement copies at no cost?
IPC will work with member companies on replacement of lost free member document as long as the original documents are within last five years or two revisions back and proof of sale/request and/or library records screenshot from the customer is provided.

If the original documents were processed by I.H.S., IPC will work with member on replacing the documents.  Proof of sale/request and/or library records screenshot from the customer must be provided to IPC with document name and revision.
