IPC Webcast Series:
Update on Compliance with Environmental Legislation Affecting the Electronics Industry
May 15 & May 22 10:00 am - 11:00 am (CT)

RoHS/REACH - Global Developments on Substance Restrictions
Thursday, May 15, 2008 - 10:00 am - 11:00 am (US Central Time)

Presented by:
Dr. Paul Goodman, ERA Technology Ltd.

EU RoHS has spawned a raft of similar requirements across the world. EU REACH is now also impacting the electrical sector across a wider range of substances leading to increased reporting requirements in the supply chain, accelerating obsolescence and increasing business risk. This presentation will provide an update on the latest developments in this complex area.

This webcast will include:

  • What substance restrictions exist today

  • New restrictions that are likely to be introduced world-wide

  • Differences in approaches between REACH and RoHS

  • How REACH will affect manufacturers of electrical equipment

  • How REACH could introduce new substance restrictions

About the speaker:
Paul Goodman provides consultancy on environmental legislation including the EU, WEEE and RoHS directives, and is assisting a growing number of clients in dealing with their implications. He regularly presents papers on RoHS compliance issues at international conferences. He has led an investigation into compliance with the RoHS directive for the UK Department of Trade and Industry on behalf of the RoHS Technical Adaptation Committee and regularly advises the UK Department of Trade and Industry on issues relating to electrical equipment and legislation. He carried out an investigation into exemptions to the RoHS directive for the European Commission in 2004 and has recently completed a review of categories 8 & 9 for possible future inclusion in the scope of the RoHS directive.

Paul is a chemist with expertise in materials used in electronics and has carried out investigations into a wide variety of failures to electronic equipment, has written reviews on electrical contacts and connectors, soldering, microelectronics, and is a regular contributor to ERA’s Environmental Review newsletter.

EuP - Update on Requirements for Energy Using Products Under the EU EcoDesign Directive
Thursday, May 22, 2008 - 10:00 am - 11:00 am (US Central Time)

Presented by:
Chris Robertson, ERA Technology Ltd.

The EuP Directive requires manufacturers to take serious measures to reduce the environmental impact of their products from energy efficiency improvements to CE marking and formal conformity assessment. With the scope of EuP now looking to encompass perhaps 50 broad product groups, this presentation will update you on the latest developments on implementation measures and how to respond.

This webcast will include:

  • Conclusions and recommendations from Lot studies
  • Predictions for implementing measures
  • Which products are likely to be included
  • How manufacturers of electrical equipment are likely to be affected

About the speaker:
Chris Robertson joined ERA in 1983 as a graduate physicist and was awarded a Ph.D. in plasma microfabrication techniques from the University of Surrey in 1990 for research carried out while at ERA Technology.

In 2002, he was appointed head of Reliability and Failure Analysis at ERA, the UK’s leading consultancy for impartial engineering reliability and failure investigation. The group provides consultancy and analysis to industry in support of changes required by environmental legislation, particularly the RoHS, WEEE and EuP directives. Areas covered include: regulatory compliance, product design and reducing energy consumption, substitution of RoHS banned materials (e.g. lead solder), exemptions, development of similar legislation worldwide (e.g. China and California RoHS), product and production troubleshooting. The group also provides a range of related guidance reports.

Chris has led the development of consultancy services concerning electrical and electronic equipment and compliance with environmental directives and was instrumental in establishing ERA’s long running international conference series on environmental legislative compliance issues covered WEEE, RoHS, EuP and REACH and associated training.
